[San Diego, CA] – San Diego Fine Art Landscape Photographer Michael James Slattery is pleased to present a Fine Art Light Painting Photograph of Balboa Park's famed California Tower, to help commemorate the park's centennial celebration.
For many, the tower has been described as "San Diego's Icon," the most photographed and best-known landmark in San Diego. As such, it was only natural for Slattery, a renowned Photography Artist known for his local urban landscape photography, to make the tower one of his signature pieces.
The California Tower was closed to the public for nearly 85 years but reopened in 2015. Created by noted architect Bertram Goodhue as a design hybrid, it blends Plateresque, Baroque, Churrigueresque, and Rococo details to present a unique Spanish-Colonial façade. Its design hints of Gothic influence with inspiration from Spanish churches in Mexico.
To capture the tower's iconic image, Slattery incorporates his unique combination of old camera techniques, traditional darkroom manipulation, light-capturing technology, a painter's blend of colors, and archival printing methods together for Fine Art Prints never seen before.
"I want to show icons of a community and how they fit into the landscape in a light that no one has seen before," said, Slattery. "Every year, hundreds of thousands of tourists flock to Balboa Park and photograph the California Tower with whzzzat I call 'New Eyes'. In most cases they're seeing it for the first time. But I've lived here my whole life, and I'm acutely aware of the infinite variety of light and colors that that surround the Tower, not just seasonally, but hourly as well. My goal is to capture that range and celebrate its magic. If I've done my job correctly, people say, 'Wow. How did you do that?'"
